Q15: What is the difference between MS Windows Server 2003 and Novel Suse Linux?
Source from Linux comparison, Server 2003(http://www.novell.com/products/server/compare.html); achieved on 17/Jan/2008.
|Area of Comparison||SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1||Windows Server 2003|
When you compare the cost of Linux servers to Windows servers, you’ll find that Novell provides the lowest cost, highest value operating system in the industry. Each subscription includes SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Novell AppArmor security technology, Xen hypervisor technology, technical support and vouchers for training or consulting services.
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server users are not required to purchase CALs (Client Access Licenses), and updates are included in the subscription.
A priority-based SUSE Linux Enterprise Server subscription is priced at US$1,499.
While the one-time cost of a Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition license is not excessive (US$3,999), the combination of other required licenses increases the TCO substantially. Additional licenses include CALs (US$40 per connected device), maintenance (25 percent of server license fee per year), and a Systems Management Server (SMS) license, if SMS is used.
|Compare Enterprise Security||
Every Windows vs. Linux server comparison has to include the essential factor of security. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is the only enterprise-class operating system that provides out-of-the box application security at no extra cost. AppArmor provides excellent protection from security intruders for applications facing the Internet.
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 SP3 is certified at Common Criteria CAPP/EAL 4+. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 with Service Pack 1 is currently under evaluation for CC-CAPP/EAL4+ certification.
Windows operating systems have a long history of security flaws, many built into Internet Explorer, IIS, Active X, and other components. These flaws have resulted in billions of dollars in lost business due to downtime required for patching, installing, security service packs and taking other measures.
Windows Server 2003 is certified at CAPP/EAL 4+.
Compare performance benchmarks when you compare Linux servers to Windows, and you’ll find there’s no comparison. x86/x64 server vendors use SUSE Linux Enterprise Server more often than any other server operating system to establish performance benchmarks for their servers. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Windows Server 2003 are comparable for TPC-C and TPC-H benchmarks, but SUSE Linux Enterprise Server dominates SPECweb2005 and SPECjbb2005 industry standard benchmarks.
More than 73 percent of the world’s top 500 most powerful computers run Linux, and many of them are running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
By comparison, Windows is not known as a high performance operating system ¡X it only has two systems in the Top 500 list.
Take a look at the virtualization capabilities in both when you do compare Linux servers to Windows. Xen hypervisor technology is included with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1. Guest operating systems available with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1 and Xen include SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 SP3, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft XP as well as NetWare 6.5 SP7 (as part of Novell Open Enterprise Server 2).
Up to 64 virtual machines (VM) can be run on a single physical machine. Symmetric multi-processor (SMP) VM is supported.
Windows hypervisor technology will be available in Windows Longhorn Server within 180 days of its release in 2007.
Virtual Server 2005 R2 (not hypervisor technology) is available via download, but no support is included. Windows operating systems are guests with Virtual Server 2005 R2. Microsoft will also support Linux guests with Linux plugins. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 add-ins will be available in the second half of 2007
Windows Server 2003 supports four VMs.
Virtual Server 2005 R2 supports SMP by virtualizing a uniprocessor configuration in the VM environment (no SMP for virtual CPUs).
The Virtual Server 2005 Management Pack enables users to monitor physical computers running Virtual Server 2005 R2 and VMs.
